Alan Wilson
Commodore

Commodore Alan Wilson hails from Dumbarton, Scotland, and now resides in Reno, Nevada. He is the owner of Wilson Maritime and Marine Consultants, LLC. He commenced his life at sea as a Navigation Deck Cadet with P&OSN Co. in 1976. He progressed through all the Deck Officer ranks on cruise ships for P&O Cruises and Princess Cruises before being promoted to Staff Captain in 1997. In April 2003 he was promoted to Captain. In 2006 he came ashore as Vice President Marine Operations for Princess Cruises. He led the Marine Operations for Princess Cruises and Holland America Group until April 2023.

His key skills include Executive Maritime Leadership, Bridge Resource Management Expertise, BRM Trainer, Board / Executive Decision-Making, Crisis Management Competence, Board Level Stakeholder Engagement, Maritime Cultural Transformation, Fleet Operation Center Management, Safety Management (ISM) / Leadership, Strategic Planning and Navigational Bridge Design.

He is an Associate Fellow of the Nautical Institute (NI), member of the NI Council and serves on the NI Technical Committee. He is a Lead ISM auditor. He was awarded the South Atlantic Medal for his involvement in the Falklands War in 1982. Career highlights include:

• Key member in introduction of a new, role-based Bridge Resource Management (BRM)
  system to elevate safety standards;
• Supported and created operating procedures;
• Assisted with the development of the CSMART Bridge Simulator in Almere, Netherlands;
• Secured permission for Princess Cruise’s new Royal Class ships, too large to comply with local regulations, to call at these destinations, enabling development of lucrative itineraries;
• Liaised with senior government officials, pilot associations and port authorities;
• Overcame issues associated with berthing adjustments/extensions in Auckland;
• Succeeded in gaining permission for Royal Class ships to safely call at all three excluded ports, facilitating multi-million dollar increased revenue;
• Atthe height of the COVID pandemic, Holland America Group (owned by Carnival) faced the monumental task of repatriating 20,000 crew members from Manila to multiple destinations worldwide. As VP, Marine Operations, Commodore Wilson arranged for complex repatriations for the entire Carnival Corporation. He assessed scale and scope, developed logistical plans, implemented QHSE protocols, facilitated distribution of medicines, provisions and PCR tests, arranged charter flights, repurposed ships as ferries, briefed senior leaders and instigated minimum non-operational manning for vessels. He succeeded in completing “mission impossible” repatriation, despite the challenges of a global pandemic.
